Woodward's gas bar, Vancouver downtown, 1957
Hudson's Bay Company Heritage Services possesses a rich collection of photographs documenting its retail activities. The bulk of the collection is made up of the photographic archives of the major retail acquisitions: Morgan's, Woodward's, Simpsons, Zellers and Kmart. The remainder of the collection consists of the Annual Report photographic collection and several private donations. The majority of the photographs are from the period 1950 to the present, but some are dating from as far back as the 1890s.
The focus of the collection is the documentation of the retail environment. This includes exteriors and interiors of stores, distribution centers, offices and other related buildings, as well as special displays and events such as store windows and in-store fashion shows. Associates and senior staff are also represented through the Annual Report collection and the archives of the various in-store publications.

Many of the photographs which depict the history of Hudson's Bay Company, especially those related to the non-retail aspects of the Company's history, are no longer part of the HBC Heritage Services' collection. These photographs, many of which are displayed on these pages, were donated to the Hudson's Bay Company Archives at the Archives of Manitoba. They are easily identified by their call number, which begins with HBCA.
