HBC post journals were meant to present a brief objective account of decisions made, challenges encountered, and trade relations forged with Aboriginal trappers. The Hudson’s Bay Company Archives show us that other interesting information can be learned from pages of post journal, too! Check out James Knight and the First York Factory Post Journal (1714) in HBCA’s Spotlight series. It reveals a little about James Knight, who had just been named Governor of Rupert’s Land after restoring York Factory to the control of HBC. Early fort journals, such as this one, provide a fascinating window into the activities of the HBC in its early years.
